Backyard Wonderland: Creating a Kids Play Space In Your Backyard

Having children made me look at my home's backyard from a whole new perspective. As my little ones started walking, I began to see how I could turn my backyard into a playground that was safe and secure for them to play. After spending a lot of time researching the safety and stability of the play structures and materials that were out there, I built a play area that's secure and fun for my kids. I created this site to share all of the ideas that I had as well as some other things I've found over the years to help other parents create the perfect play space to bring the family together at home.

Transition Your Child From A Crib To A Bed

Once your child has matured past the crib stage, you may be ready to purchase a toddler bed or a transitional bed that can be converted as your child grows. Choose a bed type for your youngster's room and accustom them to sleeping on a new mattress.

Your Space Or Future Plans Could Have A Bearing

The amount of space in your child's bedroom, whether or not you have other children who stay in the same room, and your plans for having another baby may influence the type of bed and mattress that you purchase. For a bedroom with limited space, a toddler bed may be a better fit. Although your child will not be able to use this bed type indefinitely, it definitely will come in handy until you are able to make some changes that will accommodate a larger bed style.

A transitional bed will consist of a mattress, bed frame, and rails. This type of bed is similar to a full-sized one. The only difference is that side rails will currently be secured to the frame, which will add an extra layer of protection that will prevent your child from rolling off of their mattress.

A Lightweight And Stain-Resistant Model Will Be Convenient

Large, bulky mattresses can be difficult to move, and some mattress styles that contain a fabric covering are prone to staining. Choose a lightweight mattress that is a standard thickness. A mattress that possesses a built-in stain guard will protect the fabric from permanent staining.

If you are interested in a different type of mattress that is currently on sale and are concerned about staining, purchase a waterproof cover and secure it over the mattress prior to setting the mattress on top of the bed frame. If you decided to buy a toddler bed for your child, you can use a standard crib mattress for the bed. Since most crib mattresses contain a washable cover, you won't need to add a protective layer underneath the sheets.

An Introductory Period And A Comfort Aid May Help

Your child may be concerned when they witness you moving his crib out of their bedroom and replacing it with a bed and mattress. Expect some apprehension from them on the first few nights that they sleep in the new bed. Provide your child with reassurance, and turn on a night light to help them relax and feel secure.
