Backyard Wonderland: Creating a Kids Play Space In Your Backyard

Having children made me look at my home's backyard from a whole new perspective. As my little ones started walking, I began to see how I could turn my backyard into a playground that was safe and secure for them to play. After spending a lot of time researching the safety and stability of the play structures and materials that were out there, I built a play area that's secure and fun for my kids. I created this site to share all of the ideas that I had as well as some other things I've found over the years to help other parents create the perfect play space to bring the family together at home.

Landscaping Designer Tips For Choosing The Best Unique Outdoor Fountain For Your Home's Backyard

If you want to add a unique water fountain to your backyard's landscaping but aren't sure what type of fountain will look the best, then these tips will help you choose just the right one:

Tip: Keep Your Fountain Size in Scale with Your Backyard

When you install a water fountain in your backyard, it needs to fit in with the overall scale of the yard. For example, if your backyard is massive and you put in a dinky fountain, then it will look out of place. However, if your backyard is on the smaller end and you put in a massive fountain, then it will look like you are trying too hard to impress visitors. If you have a small yard, then go with a small fountain. If your yard is very large, then you need a larger fountain if you want it to look in scale.

Tip: Think About How the Unique Fountain's Material will Wear Outdoors

Since your new backyard water fountain will be exposed to freezing temperatures in the winter and sweltering heat in the summer, it needs to be made out of a material that will age well under these conditions. For example, a large copper fountain will have a lot longer natural life aging in the weather than one made of porous concrete. This is an important consideration because you may fall in love with a concrete fountain when it's new, but will you still love it as it discolors, grows moss, and ages?

Tip: Decide if You Want a Stand-Alone Fountain or a Wall-Mounted Fountain

Another decision you need to make is the style of fountain you want. When you shop, you will notice there are two major types you must choose from:

  1. stand-alone fountains
  2. wall-mounted fountains

As their names imply, stand-alone fountains are designed to stand alone in your yard and have a nice 360-degree view, while wall-mounted fountains need to be mounted on a wall and only look nice from about 180-degrees.

Tip: Consult with a Professional Landscape Designer in Your Local Area

Finally, if you are still struggling to choose the best fountain for your home's backyard after you've taken each of the above tips into consideration, then you should seriously consider consulting with a professional landscape designer in your local area. The designer will come to your home, measure your yard, and will make suggestions concerning the types of fountains that will look fantastic in the space. You can also find unique outdoor fountains online.
